So bizarre, it could only happen to me

I am yet again having a bizarre, it-could-only-happen-to-me injury. As I've mentioned many times, I have trouble with acid reflux. Usually I can manage it with diet and some OTC drugs. But Monday night, a large volume of stomach acid literally exploded in my throat, causing me to fly from a sound sleep straight for the bathroom. It was AGONY! Like having battery acid poured down your throat. I had my husband take me to the ER because I was sure I was dying. They gave me IV morphine and some acid reducer, and sent me home with more narcotics. Tuesday I'm having an endoscopy to see what exactly the damage is.

Since Monday, I've had a sore throat that is hard to describe. Like having strep throat without the illness. I also have to try to sleep sitting up because the stomach acid comes right up if I lay down. Now I'm stressed from lack of sleep and this damnable sore throat. Ice cream helps but I'm sick of the extreme sweetness.

Am I a cartoon character or what??? Maybe I'm over-stressed from the dirty fingers in my sandwich episode.

Ouch. I know what you mean about flying from a sound sleep--a few years ago I had some really bad problems with acid reflux that resulted in a tube going down my throat. No damage, fortunately

I know the feeling I am on Nexium. Last year I lost my voice altogether from it for over a month. I hope you get better and it gets under control.

My daughter has constant episodes of acid reflux and is on the OTC meds at the moment. Have the Dr's. checked for a hiatal hernia? That can be problematic also. Good luck and keep is informed.

Poor kiddo. I have reflux, but to a lesser degree. Thank god for medication.

Make sure to rinse you mouth out with warm water a bit of baking soda to protect the enamel on your teeth.

That's so scary. I hope they can do something to help with the reflux and that there's no real damage.

Saw your comment on Attentive Aphorist and came here to find even more info about your acid problem. I have the same problem, and after you have your endoscopy just to make sure you're OK, then ask your doc for Prevacid. I've been on it for 7 years now - can't go off it completely (sometimes you only need to take it for a month and it heals the damage but then you have to watch what you eat or it comes back).

I only take 15 mg. every other day now and it keeps things under control. It works great and I highly recommend it! (Some people take other similar drugs but I find Prevacid works best for me).

I had this same problem when I was pregnant with my daughter and I slept mostly sitting up until after she was born. But after I had her it went away and that was great.

Anyway, I'd be doing some research to find out what could be causing this problem and figuring out how to get rid of it, if possible, if this happened to me and I couldn't blame it on being preggers.

I hope you get some rest and get this problem solved soon.
