Disturbing the comfortable

I'm no prude, and I completely understand that men can't get enough T&A on a daily basis.

But does anyone else find bikini-clad cheerleaders at the Olympic beach volleyball games just a bit disturbing?? Venice Beach volleyball OK, but the Olympics?

And can't the women players wear more clothing? That last game in the rain just seemed like one long porno flick. All due respect to the athletes but running shorts and a tank top wouldn't hurt your image.

And now you see why the Olympics will never ever be held in a Middle Eastern country.

Dr. Monkey is right....and I could not agree with your POV more.

Cheerleaders? Do they have cheerleaders for any other sport besides beach volleyball?

I didn't know they allowed Cheerleaders. Uh...cheeky!

Yeah, it's disturbing that I don't look that good when I play volleyball. That's why I hate them.

Of course, I haven't played volleyball in 15 years.

And why in the sand? I hate sand.

Holy cow, all this was news to me. It seems degrading to all concerned--including the Olympics.

I was saying the same thing earlier today.

I agree completely!

Hmmm. Wonder when I can find the larger picture for that one...

Just teasing. I of course share your shock and awe . . .I mean 'shock and displeasure'..!!

Greetings from a life-long Iowan, though I guess most of us are...

Ah, the Christian right wing grins again ... another implanted value finds release via the middle class. Oh Yeah!

Now what about those swimmers? Their times would be slower but overalls would cover up those almost nude guys. Modesty rules!

And those track sprinters! Those form fitting thingees that they strip off when finished racing? Holy Cow!! They should run in Grecian robes.

I missed the cheerleaders - I would have gagged if I'd seen that. While I'm not bothered by the volleyball uniform, I will never understand why they can't make a gymnastics leotard that will stay around their buns. We can put a man on the moon but we can't cover our girls cheeks?!

Bill - hmmmmmm interesting point. But can't a die-hard liberal still find objectifying women to be, well, objectionable? Aren't boobified cheerleaders a bit passe, and frankly undignified for the Olympics? I don't object to such displays everywhere, just court side at the Olympics. NASCAR rallies? sure.

OK, as much as I totally abhor this most disgusting display of flesh, it is something I have had to learn to overlook in order to appreciate the true aesthetic form of athleticism the sport embraces.

Such things as the headfirst self sacrificing dive into sand to save the ball in play, the skyward leaps to slam said ball down an opponents throat, the appreciative slap on the butt from your teammate after a score.

Pics of our president applying same to Misty May's bottom in Beijing was signal to all Americans disturbed as I by the ample display of flesh, that this is something we should try hard to look beyond for the true skill and agility the sport requires!

And then comes explanation of the real reason for those minimalist "uniforms" worn by the ladies from a former U.S. women's beach volleyballer herself who wore an antiquated one piece suit in the mid-90's:

"When you dive, the sand goes down the top and collects in the bottom."

"It looked great on TV, but it was not the most comfortable thing."

Ouch! So, ok, with that in hand I guess I can overlook all that unsightly flesh and just enjoy volleyball for the tremendous skill in requires.
