Vintage Family Vacations

More vintage family slides. And the theme this post is vacations!
Above we have my two sisters, heading up the boat at Lake Kabetogama, MN.

Our trip to Disneyland about 1967. Above is me on left, and sister Cheesecake Maven on the right, wearing the sweaters my Mom had made. Behind us the March Hare is getting my brother's attention. Sister #2 was just a baby and stayed at our friend's house.

We made several trips out west to stay with relatives in California and Colorado. One even involved a car trip on Route 66. I'll never forget onion rings made from chopped onions in Tucumcari, New Mexico.

Back to Kabetogama circa 1973

My brother at Knott's Berry Farm, California. Mom knitted that sweater too.

At the cousins' house, Barstow, California, 1967

In front of the Roy Rodgers museum, where they actually have his horse Trigger stuffed and mounted. I'm noticing that we wore the same outfits pretty much every day.

Again Kabetogama, our yearly fishing pilgrimage. This was probably 1975 when my adolescence took an ugly turn into straight hair and big glasses.

Above the travel weary family getting off the train in California. My parents had planned to "see the West" by train, but after a very loooonnnnggg trip with whiny kids, they bought plane tickets back home.

Fun. There always seems to be a moment of recognition when I see old family photos. I guess it is the FAMILY OF MAN.

We're about 70 miles south of Lake Kab.

Those could be my family snaps! The Roy Rogers Museum, alas, is no more. Remember how it was the only thing for miles around? Over the years the urban sprawl crept up to the place. I think it's a car lot now. That photo of your brother, the mountain in the background tells me that was taken out at Calico Ghost Town, where Knott's got all the buildings for the original Berry Farm years ago. They had a wcaky shack, too.

Those are so great. We made that Disneyland Knotsberry Farm trip when I was in 2nd grade too.

Cool! I have only been to Cali one time...it was for work.

I saw LAX, the inside of a car service, the hotel and its grounds and the inside of a bus taking us back to LAX.

Boo! I need to take boo boo there once.

These photos are so much fun to see. Your last line cracked me up. We once had the misfortune to think it would be a good idea to take three young children on a train to Memphis. Adding to the hilarity was our mistaken belief that we'd be fine for one night without a sleeper.

We toured Graceland like zombies. Two days later, we rented a car and drove home. In silence.

These are awesome. My husband and I talked yesterday about family traditions and how we were going to have yearly vacations. You know our parents were brilliant. They don't have half the books we got on raising kids and did an excellent job of balancing kids with love, discipline and fun!
